MaacahEats

after working with both rising chefs and a James Beard-award winner to bring the MaacahEats experience to groups from 6 to 40, I swear I could manage a popup chef incubator.

independently published quarterly, belladonna magazine aims to build a fashion industry in Birmingham, and diversify fashion photography and publishing at large.

I excel at connecting people. I mobilize freelancers to bring all of my projects to life, and each one shrinks the degrees of separation between the world's creatives.

A New Classic: a fashion exhibit

Artist Statement: "Looking forward to a possible future in which Birmingham is a fashion pillar of the South, I invited regional fashion designers to create avant-garde garments for an exhibit that proposes a vision for Birmingham's fashion identity. Drawing inspiration from sources like John Collier's painting of the Oracle at Delphi; a larger-than-life sized pair of articulated wings; and, dramatic floral and set design, this exhibit explores the romantic, natural, and gothic capacities of the Southern identity, and imagines them as: A New Classic."

curated and produced by: Maacah Davis

invited designers: Jan King, Summer Crook, Saige Pilgrim

visual artist: Tyler Sanford

set design: Ali Ribe, Ginny Henry, Caitlin Lawson

floral design: Savannah and Austin Kilpatrick

lighting & floral design: A&G Lighting

articulated wings: Kelsey Templeton

live models: Sarah Patton, Olivia Thompson, Alex Williams

hair and makeup: Khadijah Page

how I made it happen:

I based each gallery's design on a primary image from the artists' moodboards, and outlined a comprehensive plan to maximize our time and budget. Each night, my team and I pieced together every physical element of the galleries, wielding hammers, paint rollers, and canvas fabrics. I curated a team of models and a hair and makeup artist so I could replace the center mannequin of each gallery with live models to make the opening night show interactive; and, I recruited floral designers Savannah and Austin Kilpatrick to provide fresh floral accents the night of the show.

Despite limited daily access to the Blueprint Building, my team and I transformed three connecting rooms in the barren warehouse space in only the 3 days before opening night.

result

Combine my resourcefulness and leadership with a great team and talented fashion designers, complemented by light effects from A&G Lighting and the support of the Design Week Birmingham staff, and you get an exhibit that makes a compelling case for investment in a Birmingham-based fashion industry.

It is so well-received that the Director of Marketing for the Riverchase Galleria asks to showcase it in a vacant store when the exhibit closes. Success.

Also, Sloss credits this program as proof of the space's viability as a venue, and it leads to the opening of the Blueprint restaurant.
